Description
Why did they build the covered bridges? To get to the other side, of course. Historically, if you had to move livestock or yourself to the other side of a waterway, you had basically two options, cross in the water or travel to a point were to could find a land crossing. So, it made sense, that a community would come together to build a bridge. At first, the bridges were left uncovered, which dramatically shorten the bridges’ lifespan. Someone suggested that they cover the bridges, where it was found to increase the lifespan of the bridge, sometimes, up to 100 years. Unfortunately, today there are approximately only 750 covered bridges left in the United States as of 2004.
