Description
The enduring icon of WW2 fighter aircraft the Spitfire is writ large in the history of the UK and the RAF. Evolved from the Schneider Trophy aircraft built by the Supermarine company the first aircraft flew in 1936. Quickly accepted by the RAF the Spitfire became the mainstay of the UK fighter squadrons. Continually developed throughout WW2 - no less than 22 Mks or variants were produced the Spitfire was still effective in a combat environment even at the end of WW2 - the later Mks were capable of speeds in excess of 440mph and heights of 44,000ft. Always powered with the Merlin and Griffon series engines the Spitfire with its elegant shape and distinctive growl is still a regular attendee at most military airshows - dozens, of the over 20,000 built, are still flight capable throughout Europe and worldwide
